Find happiness - Finding happiness is easy

Updated on November 22, 2011

Can I find happiness?

Have you wondered can I find happiness? Well most of us do at one point or the other. We are all in the race to finding happiness, money or whatever we think makes us happy. In the process our energies are scattered, and we are not committed to making even one option work. Affluence, wealth, affordability and the plastic card have given us a free rein to check out all possibilities of making ourselves happy.

We hear people saying, "I would be happy ‘if only I could find the right guy' "or "if only I could get the job" or "if only ....." and the list goes on and on. Living the present , enjoying what we have , making it more meaningful, adding value to what is already there or making a difference in some one's life may actually add to our happiness quotient.

Have you considered this? The very fact that we have more money than ever, more opportunities than ever, every thing that we want is within our reach and yet we are not happier than before. Why??

What is happiness? How to find happiness?

Here is what the popular dictionaries and encyclopedias have to say. Happiness is characterized by good luck, being fortunate and enjoying oneself. It is marked by pleasure, satisfaction and joy or being especially well-adapted and cheerful . If you've noticed, happiness is connected to luck, fortune or chance, which implies that we have no control over our thoughts and our emotions and that we are dependent on chance or luck. Happiness is a state of emotional health where a person is in control over their thoughts and emotions and well adjusted with the environment around them.

Is it impossible to find happiness? Impossible is nothing.

Abraham Lincoln once said: ‘Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.’ This sums up our search for happiness which is eluding us all the time, like the will of the wisp. Can I live my dream.? It is difficult for my rational mind to accept that the entire reason for our existence is running after something that keeps evading us. I am sure that most of us would chose to be happy where we are rather than to run after happiness rationally speaking; however, we do the opposite.

Positive thinking - Mean to Find happiness

We have always been taught to ‘love people’ and ‘use things’. If you look around today, we will hear of people loving stuff and using people. The tables have turned, and so has our happiness quotient. The very things that we work for and treasure so much today will become just a another one of our many possessions a couple of years down the line. So much of our time is spent in chasing happiness that we tend to disregard what we already have our marriages, relationship, families children) which has the potential to make our lives happier. If we learn to prioritize what is important to us, we would pay attention to other things more than stuff.

Get stress out of your life Identify the cause for stress and weed it out. Examine your work load, prioritze based on level of importance and work on them methodically. This will help you overcome stress and handle the rest of your affairs with ease. Often good planning is what we really need.

Happy attitude - finding happiness

Persistence

We cannot run away from a job that ensures our bread and butter is on the plate each day, especially in times of economic downturn, just because some one chooses to differ with us. We do every thing we can to ensure that it all works out, and apply our minds to the fullest extent. We need to apply this attitude to our relationships as well. Give it time and you will reap the fruit of your labor.

Patience

This seems to be a commodity that we are in short supply of. Since we have so many options, we are ready to try another one to see if we could be happy. If one relationship does not work, then getting another person is the easiest solution to our problem. I do believe that having many options is good, but maybe we have one option too many.

Be human

The most important thing that we can do, to ensure what we value most lasts long, is to learn to be human. We all make mistakes, so let us re-learn to say "Sorry, I was wrong" and take responsibility for our lives. Pride has cost many people their happiness. So it is okay to be human. Admitting your mistake will never lower your worth in the eyes of others, in fact it increases the respect people have for you. If saying sorry is a difficult task for you may have a problem in the area of self confidence or self esteem. Reviewing this and working on this may help you improve your emotional health and happiness quotient!

Finding happiness in marriage and relationships

Value people and love them

In our relationship, when two people come together, there are bound to be differences of opinions. This is how it is and how it will always be. Agreeing to disagree and yet respecting one another and living in harmony will give things a chance to work themselves out. The erosion of values that we once held close is what is causing this great rift.

Very high expectations sets you up for failure

We are often expecting our mates to be the perfect human beings. This is highly irrational and unrealistic. Sometimes, we have very high expectations of ourselves too. Living in an idealistic world and expecting life to be made of fairy-tale dust causes many a relationship to break. This put too much stress on the ourselves and others. We need to learn to be realistic and accept our limitations. This will take away a lot of the pressure to perform and let us just be our true selves.

Communicate

If only we learn to communicate rightly, most of our problems would be taken care of. Women in relationships need to know so many details, while men just want the outline. Women are looking for emotional exchange, while men just want the job done. We need to strike a balance if any relationship has to work. We must try to accommodate words like compliments, cooperation, negotiation, pacify, let go, give and take, etc. in our lives to make relationbships work.

Find happiness in your life

Lastly, we may not have all that we love but we have the power to love all that we have and make ourselves happy. We have the power to be happy; it is just a decision away. Decide today to work at it and your dreams will follow you!

"Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself." said Ralph Waldo Emerson. So lets go around making our world sweet smelling!!
